Colouring help

Painting tools

Choose a colour and a brush. Adjust size and intensity with the sliders. The defaults are 6 px and 25%. Repeated strokes gradually strengthen the colour; the eraser removes it again.

Round brush, wide brush, spray and fill use the same intensity per application. A brush application lasts from contact to release. Overlapping segments and spray dots do not add extra opacity within it. Release and start another stroke to build up colour. Soft edges are lighter according to coverage; spray keeps its dot pattern. The eraser also removes the selected strength once per stroke. Tool, colour, size and intensity are taken at contact; changes apply to the next stroke.

Fill colours a contour-enclosed area. Mouse and stylus fill on contact. In finger mode, first move the visible brush tip, then keep it in the same place for at least 0.5 seconds. Each significant movement restarts the wait. Merely touching or tapping does not fill. Up to one screen pixel of jitter is tolerated. Release, gestures, menu or tool changes cancel the wait. At most one fill per contact; lift and touch again for another fill. Intensity, undo and painting storage still apply; brush size has no effect. Areas open to the image edge are not filled. The mobile palette stays visible at the top right.

The fill also extends exactly one bitmap pixel underneath the enclosing contour, including diagonal corners. The original black line art remains unchanged and visible; neighbouring white areas are not filled. This width refers to the painting bitmap and does not change with zoom.

Fill uses the intensity currently selected on the slider, including the first pixel underneath the contour. 25 % applies a light layer; 100 % is opaque. Filling again builds up the existing colour using the newly selected intensity.

Menu left and Menu right choose the menu side and the finger brush orientation. Right is the default; your choice is remembered in this browser. On touch devices, the scroll strip sits on the outer side of the menu. Use the separate Finger painting button to turn finger painting on or off.

Finger painting enables the visible brush regardless of display size. One finger paints at the brush tip; drawing brushes also apply colour with a short tap. Fill instead requires movement followed by at least 0.5 seconds of stillness. Broad finger pads are allowed in this explicitly enabled mode. Hand contacts during a stylus stroke are still suppressed until lifted. Two fingers navigate without painting. After a gesture, lift all fingers and touch again. With finger painting off, normal browser gestures remain available.

Finger painting starts enabled on small touch screens. On larger displays and devices without touch, it starts disabled. Use Finger painting to switch modes at any time. Your choice remains for the open picture, including rotation, zoom and menu actions. Reloading or opening another picture applies the appropriate default again.

Stylus, fingers and navigation

In stylus mode, the browser handles finger gestures to pan and zoom the page. With finger painting enabled, one finger draws and two fingers pan and zoom the picture. The narrow strip remains available for page navigation. Hand contacts during stylus strokes are ignored.

The tools stay at the top once they reach the screen edge. Scroll inside the menu to move its contents. The narrow strip beside it still scrolls the page. Signed-in users can continue their online painting on any device. Navigation waits for a save acknowledgement. A local draft is an additional backup if the tab closes abruptly or the network fails.

On devices without touch, image zoom from 100 % to 400 % is available below the brushes. The tools keep their normal size. Use the image scrollbars to reach every enlarged area. The slider also supports arrow keys. Each picture starts at 100 %. Touch devices retain the existing finger gestures.

On desktop, the picture and tools together use 90 % of the visible window width. Above 100 % image zoom, hold the right mouse button on the picture and drag to move it without painting. After release, the left button paints again with the selected tool. The scrollbars remain available too.

Painting on a mobile phone

On small touch screens, the colour-palette button opens and closes the tools on the selected side. Finger painting has its own on/off button. Menu left and Menu right do not change the painting mode. Paint stays at the visible, correspondingly tilted brush tip. Two fingers pan or zoom without painting. The brush appears on contact and disappears on release. Previewing before contact requires actual finger-hover coordinates from the device.

Two fingers take priority over the brush. Zooming or panning rolls back a provisional finger stroke and hides the brush. To paint again after a gesture, lift all fingers and touch down afresh.

Near the actual image edges, the distance between your finger and the brush tip decreases so that even the final edge pixels can be painted. A zoomed image has some extra panning room around all four edges. Use two fingers to move each corner into reach.
